Movement for Extending Government Job Entry Age Limit to 35

The job seekers continue their movement to extend the job entry age limit to 35 in the government organization. So, their demand is strengthening day by day. A large number of job seekers have been demanding to extend the job entry age limit from 30 to 35 for a long time in Bangladesh. Though many experts and intellectuals support their demand, the concerned authority has not given any assurance to satisfy their demand. Since this is a logical demand of job seekers, some experts believe the job entry age limit will be extended soon.

On September 7, 2024, the general students and job seekers held a mass gathering for extending job entry age up to 35 in front of national museum. This mass gathering was started at 11:00 am on September 7, 2024. The job seekers have blocked the road at the Shahabug of the Dhaka and shouting with different slogans. They have declared that they will continue their program until the government delegation arrives. As a result, there is a heavy traffic jam, and the people face suffering for moving.

The convener of Nagarik Oikko, Mr. Mahmudur Rahman Manna, joined to express solidarity with this movement. Before this, the organization called this mass gathering in a press conference in front of the central library of Dhaka University at 5:00 on September 6, 2024.

Job Entry Age

The job seekers said the maximum job entry age in around 162 countries is 35 years. Among these, in some countries the age is open, which means there is no age restriction for job entry. The developed countries, including India, set the maximum age limit at 35, complying with the international standards. But the age limit is 35 for us. We do not accept this discrimination in this new Bangladesh.

Argument in Favor of the Increase of Job Entry Age Limit

  1. Increased Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of the people in our country has increased. So, the authority should consider extending the maximum age limit for entry into the jobs.
  2. Higher Age Limit in Neighboring Countries: Our neighboring countries maintain maximum age limit more than 30. Such as India, which maintains the maximum job entry age limit in the range of 35 to 45 years, depending on the state.
  3. From the Point of View of Humanity: Some students complete their graduations hoping to get a good government job. But if they exceed the age limit of 30, they cannot apply for a government job. So, the authorities in our country should give them an opportunity to apply for government jobs from the point of view of humanity.

Argument Against the Increase of Job Entry Age Limit

  1. Extra Pressure on Employers: If the authority in our country increases the maximum job entry age limit, the number of candidates for the job will increase. As a result, the employers will have to handle more candidates. It creates extra pressure on employers. The employers may also need extra manpower to handle and scrutinize more job applications. It is time-consuming and may also create extra costs.
  2. Fresh Graduates Will Face More Competition: Because of the extension of the age limit, the number of job seekers will increase. As a result, the fresh graduates will face more competition. But some employers prefer fresh graduates for their organizations. They believe a fresh graduate can contribute more than an old graduate.
  3. Job Seekers Wait More Time For Government Jobs: The job seekers will spend more time to get a job. But if the authority does not extend the age limit, the job seeker will try to be self-sufficient. They may be entrepreneurs. That means they try to find an alternative career. Some graduates who do not get any jobs may establish their career through freelancing or other alternatives.
  4. Pressure May Arise To Increase The Retirement Age: Now the retirement age for the general employee of a government organization is 59. If the authority increases the age limit for job entry, there may be pressure to increase the retirement age for government jobs. But if the authority increases the retirement age, the post will be blocked for some years, which may temporarily increase the rate of unemployment in our country.

Movement Continues for a Long Time

Job seekers continue their movement to increase the job entry age. They argue that the life expectancy of the people in our country has increased. They also argue that our neighboring countries have not limited the age of 30 for entering government jobs. So, we should consider the job entry age limit in our country. Therefore, the job seekers continue their various programs for this issue.

The job seekers were moving forward to Shahbug on May 31, 2024, but the police blocked their movement at Shahabug. Then they change their way of moving to the TSC in the face of the obstacles of the police. They say that Mr. Suvo plays the main role in their movement. One of the marchers said that it was not expected from the police. Every time the police create obstacles in our movement. We are not coming here to create any riots.

On May 31, 2024, some job seekers in our country arranged a sit-in program to satisfy their demand for increasing the age limit. They declared they would continue their movement until the authorities implemented their demand. The job seekers arranged a sit-in program at the Raju sculpture at Dhaka University on that day.

They said they will continue their sit-in program in front of the Raju sculpture at Dhaka University everyday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. The job seekers will continue this program until their demand is met. They demand to break the maximum age limit of 30 for entering government jobs; they want a maximum age limit of 35. They chanted to break the black hand of 30.

One of the speakers of this movement said that they want a maximum age limit of 35 years. Since their is an age limit of 30, we cannot continue our academic studies and job preparation studies properly. We do not accept this age limit, and we will not accept this limit. If the authority wants to establish a smart Bangladesh, the authority must give us the opportunity to enter government jobs in our country. Why is there a restriction on the age limit of 30 for us when other counters do not impose any restriction on the age limit of 30?
